When the external temperature drops to a certain value or when the oil filter exceeds its normal service limit, the relief valve opens under special pressure, allowing the unfiltered oil to flow directly into the engine. That way, impurities in the oil can get into the engine, but the damage is much less than if there was no oil in the engine. Therefore, the relief valve is the key to protect the engine in an emergency. (also known as a bypass valve)
